CHAPTER 23

Sara walked into the house with one bag of groceries and checked the clock. Ben would be home in ten minutes. She had just enough time to unload the car. She put some eggs in the fridge and took out three, of the ten, boxes of pasta she had bought, pasta being on sale for eighty-eight cents a box this week, and headed to the pantry. As she did a flash of peachy-pink on the table caught her eye.

“Oh,” said Sara, and walked over to the table to take a look.

The amaryllis was fully opened and stunning. Enormous. Sara had never grown one before. Ty had given it to her for Valentine’s Day. The pot had sat on the kitchen table for weeks, before it finally sprouted. Sara wasn’t the greatest with plants. She tried but eventually life got in the way and she’d forget. Sara was determined not to let that happen with this bulb. For weeks the bulb had sat in pot doing nothing. Sara figured she must have screwed it up. She’d see Ty glaring at the plant occasionally and wonder if she should just get rid of it, or if that would be worse.

Finally the days started getting a little longer and the kitchen was flooded with sunlight most of the afternoon. One day there was a small green tip, poking out of the seemingly dead brown bulb. Sara had noticed it first, but hadn’t said anything. Another day had gone by and then Ben had noticed it in the middle of dinner. “It’s growing,” he had shouted, with his typical over the top (but wonderful) enthusiasm. Even Robbie had smiled.

After that the thing went crazy. One night at dinner Ty had stopped eating, frozen, fork half-way to his mouth, then said, “I swear I can see it growing.”

Sara pulled her cellphone out of her pocket and snapped a picture. She sent it to Ty with a message, “see good things come to those who wait.” Then she went back to the garage, to get some more of the groceries. Sara was halfway down the basement stairs, with an eighteen pound turkey, when the phone buzzed in her pocket. She set the turkey down on the counter and then checked her phone. The text from Ty read “I’m going to hold you to that.”

Sara stuck her phone back in her pocket giggling. Ty hadn’t wanted to let her get out of bed that morning, but she needed to get the kids up for school. Ty had been promising her he’d drive Robbie to school, if Robbie missed the bus, when she wriggled out of his grasp. Even now, just thinking about it, Sara could feel Ty’s hands on her and the heat of the memory raced through her, bringing a flush to her face. “Stop,” she told herself.

Sara opened the refrigerator to get the turkey in and groaned. Ty’s birthday cake was in there. She and Ben had finished it up yesterday, when Ben had come home from school.
